Client Blog Post - High Quality Makeup Training and Comparing "Like with Like"
The MAKUP Academy for Film & Media Makeup offers exceptional yet affordable training in all aspects of hair and makeup design for film and TV. All students receive personal attention from Veronica McAleer, the internationally-acclaimed, twice Oscar nominated, Emmy and RTS award-winning founder.
Veronica trained in makeup and hair design at BBC Pebble Mill in 1984, and began working in the film industry in 1990. She has worked on over 40 films and countless television programmes. Veronica has designed hair and makeup for 26 feature films working with actors such as Dame Judi Dench, Michael Caine, Keira Knightly, Colin Firth and Jennifer Connolly.
Furthermore, she worked on the Oscar-nominated movie ‘Shakespeare in Love’, and big budget films such as ‘The Da Vinci Code’, ‘The Tourist’ and ‘Assassins Creed’. Most recently Veronica was in America working with Paul Bettany on the hair and makeup design for his next TV series, ‘Manhunt: The Unabomber’.
Last year Veronica decided to downscale her on-set work and to set up the MAKUP Academy in The Custard Factory, Digbeth. This unique academy provides top-quality, intensive and above all practical training which is delivered in small classes. Students receive professional portfolios when they graduate, unique training on set etiquette and continuity skills, and relevant industry work experience. All of these features further enhance the students’ prospective career opportunities.
At the MAKUP Academy Veronica also provides the most cost-effective media makeup training in the country. Other organisations providing similar training yet charge between £2,000-£4,500 more for 1-2 weeks’ less training.
These organisations are based around the country and many are not as centrally-located, nor easily accessible as Birmingham, where the MAKUP Academy is based.
Veronica is able to provide this level of training so inexpensively because she does most of the training herself and does not have the overheads involved in employing a vast team of trainers.
This hands-on approach has the additional benefit for students that they receive personal guidance and mentoring from one of the top celebrity makeup artists who is still working in the industry.
Moreover, it is not just the difference in cost which is considerable. When thinking about applying for a course, a student should be aware they are not always comparing like-for-like.
Veronica’s expertise means that she truly is the best possible teacher in this field at the moment. Now is a golden opportunity for serious students of film and TV makeup to be trained by the BBC-bred expert.
Furthermore, once they have received this unmatchable training, Veronica’s students are then put forward for weeks of practical work experience in film, TV and theatre – much more than many similar organisations offer (many will promise, at best, one day).
One of Veronica’s missions is to highlight the technical skills actually entailed in the job of film hair and makeup designer. To succeed a professional media makeup artist needs a broad set of skills plus the right ability, aptitude and attitude. Veronica hopes to enlighten the public in respect of this and ultimately recruit and train suitable students from all walks of life.
